www.hotforwords.com to request words. Why is football called soccer in some parts of the world? Hello my dear students… it’s FIFA World Cup Soccer time again! It’s football What? It’s football, not soccer. Not this again! FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association Oh yeah.. that’s right.. they call it football everywhere else in the world, except for here in the US, where we call it soccer. Not just the US.. other places call it soccer as well! Really? OK.. I think it’s time for another lesson about Football and Soccer. So let’s get started! Intro I taught you in an earlier video about why football is called soccer in the US and football in most of the rest of the world. Show bit from video As we learned in that video the term Soccer was actually invented in England as another name for the game where you used your feet to move a ball around a field. It all started when the Rugby School thought it would be cool to actually carry the ball down the field instead of just kicking it. Football enthusiasts were horrified and split off from Rugby Football in 1863 and formed Association Football to keep the ball on the ground! Around that time, Brits also liked to shorten words and terms in funny ways, for example they called breakfast, brekkers and rugby was often times called rugger. Since Association Football was such a long name it was shortened to AsSOC. Football and eventually just Soccer. Since the term soccer was created in England you would think

LOL people can’t even accept the truth. They can’t imagine America being more logical than them so they live in their own ignorance. Just face it, USA has validity in calling it Football. Just a bunch of jealous haters.Spending all your time on a country you don’t even like.Just proves we’re the best.

@ArmadaFiume1987 Lol i call it football, americans call it soccer so what? its just the way they say it. I do agree the “ball” they use in “hand-egg” is NOT a ball.

@mramo I AGREE WITH YOU MATE

However one confusion springs to mind. Why do Americans called their national sport “Football” when they use their hands more than their feet? It should really be called “American Handball”.

  7. mramo says:

The word “Soccer” was coined by the Brits themselves as a nickname (same as Australian Rules Football = Aussie Rules). Short for asSOCiation football. They took “SOC” out from it & made it “SOCCER”. Americans still use this nickname to avoid confusion with American Football which they simply call “Football” (rarely Gridiron).

Football sounds better since it involves a foot and a ball.

Want to know why it’s called Soccer? First of all, the REAL NAME is Association Football. The British later user assoc, short for Association Football, and then it was changed to soccer. So we “ignorant” Americans name it correctly. Football is also correct but soccer isn’t incorrect.

And to believe that you guys get so angry because of such a pathetic thing is just…sad.

  14. CFL0LSmilyFace says:

    @ArmadaFiume1987

We’re newer to the sport, and at least have have more variety. Even though we dont concentrate on soccer, we do better than some teams. And soccer is also the correct way to spell it look it up.

  15. olubusayoenigma says:

It’s really stupid why the Americans call Futbol soccer and American Football Football. The prefix football is means feet. In American football you use 95.8 percent of your hands.

  22. zakariawwerko says:

American’s suck in football thats why they call it soccer

  23. NinjaJ10 says:

Calling the sport a different name in another country just shows that everyone is different and there is nothing wrong with that. NonAmericans only use this pointless topic as another excuse to hate on America. I’m American and i respect what other countries call the sport because I don’t like making a huge deal about an issue that is so small unlike NonAmericans who obviously don’t understand that not everyone is the same. Whoever hates America just because we call it soccer should be ashamed

  24. Geraldo1101 says:

@oJKBo medieval football is a abstract of many games played throughout the middle ages. There’s no distinct medieval football code, it’s all a bunch of games, we don’t know that much about. However King Edward III of England issued this declaration in 1363: “moreover we ordain that you prohibit under penalty of imprisonment all and sundry from such stone, wood and iron throwing; handball, football, or hockey; coursing and cock-fighting” Note, that there’s a HANDBALL and a FOOTBALL. Think a lill!
